Gastric Ulceration by horses: 5 medicinal plants for stomach patients

Apart from back problems and arthrosis, stomach ulcers are unfortunately another widespread disorder among our horses. It is usually caused by stress and incorrect feeding. Apart from various feed supplements, the gastrointestinal tract of a stomach patient may be supported by a variety of medicinal plants so as to heal and remain healthy.

As with humans, herbal mixtures containing fennel, aniseed, and caraway seeds may be used against gastrointestinal disorders in horses. These three herbal medicines are characterized by their excellent wholesome quality as well as their positive effect on the digestive tract.

1. Fennel


May be used for digestive disorders of all kinds and has a wonderful effect against colic pain, relieving cramps and flatulence. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect, fennel supports the healing of stomach ulcers.

2. Aniseed


It´s a digestive agent relieving flatulence, (especially in case of gas colics), and it also has an anticonvulsive and relaxing effect on the digestive tract. The essential caraway oils prevent flatulence and have an anticonvulsive effect as well. At the same time, they enhance the digestion and have a soothing effect on the gastrointestinal tract, especially in easily stressed horses.

3. Camomile


Is known especially for its analgesic, anticonvulsive and healing effect on the digestive tract. In combination with fennel, aniseed and caraway seeds, it may prevent colics, diarrhea, and constipation. With regard to nervous and easily stressed horses with a tendency to develop intestinal spasms (colics), camomile soothes both mind and spirit, along with the digestive tract. Especially in cases of acute stomach ulcers, the antibacterial effect of camomile may prevent inflammation of the stomach and the intestines.

4. Peppermint


It has a positive effect on the digestive tract. It enhances the digestion, relieves flatulence and cramps, and may help against diarrhea.

5. Melissa


May be used to calm and soothe the nervous system. Thus, it may help against colic pain due to stress and prevent stomach ulcers. Besides, it eliminates intestinal gas and has an anticonvulsive effect in case of indigestion.
